4 Simple Marketing Tricks for Startups

4 Simple Marketing Tricks for Startups As a relatively young business, it’s important to be seen by the right kind of people so that you have a chance of getting ahead as early as possible. While you may think about marketing as something that’s campaign-driven and rather costly, you need to consider all types of communication you have with your customers as marketing. Even how you treat the individual customer can become a form of marketing as they might share their positive experience with others who again may become potential customers. Here is a list of easy ways you can get the most out of your business’ marketing and make sure it’s getting the exposure it deserves. It doesn’t even have to cost you too much to get started right away and reap the benefits later. #1 Team up with social media influencers A marketing strategy should be exactly what it sounds like; a strategy to reach a wider market and keep your current customers happy. Start by logging into your company’s social media account and shift the focus from the number of likes your posts are receiving to who actually likes your posts. While a thousand likes may be able to expand the reach of your posts slightly, a share from the right person may boost it significantly and it will continue to snowball from there. It’s not as easy as simply getting in touch with social media influencers, though, as they already have more than enough people reaching out to them and trying to take advantage of their network. Start by engaging with their content instead; meet them in their own arena, send them a sample of your products, and make it worth their time. If you’re able to make them fall in love with your product, you might see the kind of marketing success you’ve been hoping for and the social media influencers may send even more visitors to your startup’s website. It’s the kind of stuff that you’ll be able to live off for years to come. #2 Invest in your website Just like social media is key to reaching a wider audience, your website is key to appearing as professional and authoritative as possible. Way too many small businesses neglect their website and forget to maintain it it’s not enough to give it a makeover and let it be for the next couple of years. Your business is, of course, trendy and up to date on everything current so you should make sure your website reflects this. Have a look at around the web to read up on the latest design trends, consider hiring someone who can implement creative web design and allow the site to give potential customers the right kind of impression of your business. You should think about it as your company’s storefront and there is simply no room for messy landing pages, outdated fonts or a complete lack of white space. Remember to make it as easy as possible to navigate on as well, by the way, and make it compatible with mobile devices to keep up with the latest technology. Having a proper website can do more for you than just communicating the brand of your business and help you to keep a professional appearance although this is also important. When someone spends no more than a couple of seconds on your page before they’re frustrated by its design or lack of information and leave, Google will rank your site a bit lower as it failed to give the visitors what they wanted. You know very well that SEO is vital today so don’t punish your business by neglecting its website. It should rank up there together with the other successful ones; invest a bit of time and effort into it and it will pay you back in spades. #3 Remember content marketing While we have mentioned the importance of SEO, content marketing is about more than just implementing the right kind of keywords so that Google can sort you out. At its core, your content marketing should focus on trying to help your customers and answer their various questions. You might want to hire someone professional to take care of this for you or you can attempt to do it on your own. Try to think about what your target audience may need help with. If you’re in the auto industry, it’s easy enough to identify a few issues they may experience from time to time; what they should remember before selling their vehicles, how to make sure it lasts as long as possible, what they must think about before purchasing a second-hand car, etc. Your expert advice will undoubtedly be helpful to them and they will pass your content on to their friends and family if they found it helpful. It’s boosting your ranking on the search engines while simultaneously helping to spread the word about your business. That’s the kind of stuff that helps it to take off a bit faster. #4 Work on strengthening your brand Last but certainly not least, you want to ensure that you’re offering products of the highest possible quality. The reputation of your brand depends on the quality of your products and you simply won’t be able to build the kind of business you have in mind unless you invest in it and understand that, regardless of how much you believe in it, your products are not necessarily perfect. Focus on receiving feedback from your customers, encourage them to tell you about their experience with your business, and make an honest attempt at fixing whatever they dislike about it. It’s not an easy task at all but it will benefit you tremendously, in the long run. When this is over with, you should show these customers that you have taken their feedback to heart and attempted to improve. Send them a sample of your new and improved product and wait for the next round of feedback to help your business grow and prosper. Too many business owners seem to think that, as long as they build it and spread the word, customers will line up. In reality, you will constantly need to improve your products as well as the relationship you have with your customers; keep these tips in mind, though, and you’ll be well on your way.

Dear Future Me (2015) - When I Grow Up

Dear Future Me (2015) - When I Grow Up New glasses (that Im planning to wear in public often, which Ive never really done before and Ive had glasses since 1987!) + new haircut + unstraightened hair (which I also havent done regularly since 87 or so!) = the 2015 me! This is the fifth time Ive written a Dear Future Me letter. You can read the others here and  here  and  here  and here  (and why I didnt write one in 2013  here), and the idea behind the Dear Future Me letter from the amazeballs woman I stole it from (hi Jess Lively!) right  here.  Like past years, I decided to keep some things privatebut this is about 95% of the letter below.   Dear Future Michelle, This has been your year. Everything has really “clicked”, and it’s because after 5 years of being a Woman of the World (aka full-time entrepreneur), of the things you’ve gone through, the lessons you’ve learned, as well as your successes you feel really, truly, ready to Play Big and step into the spotlight. This year, you didn’t shy away from the new, the uncomfortable, the risky. The fact that you remained open to change and reinvention that you welcomed it with an enthusiastic embrace made all the difference. You’ve had lots of highlights professionally this year: signing with an agent and selling your book proposal for a nice advance; rebranding and launching your new site (I know you want me to tell you whether you change the name of your business, but you’ll have to wait on that one!); (finally!) breaking the 6-figure barrier by almost $20K; selling out your new offer with Tiffany  and Erin; and being part of 6 different in-person events and workshops. You celebrated your 5th entrepreneuriversary this year, which was a huge milestone. It feels like it’s gone by in a snap, and you still pinch yourself that you get to do this work as your career. Keep that feeling of appreciation and gratefulness at the heart of your decisions. Actually, it all feels different this year. You’re no longer approaching these goals with the perspective of a workhorse, jumping from one to the other in lightning speed. Instead, you feel present. Joyful. Peaceful. Powerful. Your work isn’t a scramble to make your milestones, but instead a journey to enjoy. It’s a perspective that you’ve had to grow into, and you’re ready to do your work and live your life with intentions. The fact that you know you can make the money you need (and want!) in “just” 30 hours a week has made a big difference in your mindset. You can now trust yourself even more, having proven yourself over and over again. This is what Trust is about. And, of course, your baby girl is at the heart of this. Because of her, you want to be present. Healthy. Strong. Happy. You want her to see you loving the work you do, making your dreams come true, and working as a team with Luke. You also still love the novelty of getting to spend time together each morning, and feel special knowing you can head to the park with her at 11am on a Wednesday if you want. The fact that you get quality time with her each and every day is something you earned, and are so proud of. She makes you wanna stop and smell the roses, which you do every day by writing in your 5 Year Journal and filling your time capsule with proud moments and things to remember. You really made your health and good habits a priority this year, too. You finally stopped picking your fingers. You finished a half-marathon! You walked the entirety of the Avon Walk. You meditated most days, and did your yoga. You cut back on the sugar and desserts. You even cooked a few new dishes! You’re ordering in less and eating better, and it’s improved your energy level. It’s been hard to change these habits, but by keeping them in the forefront of your mind and making them a priority, it’s made a difference. You and Luke were the boss over your savings this year, too. By paying yourselves a salary, putting 20% of your net profits in your retirement accounts, and putting the rest in savings, you’ve replenished your emergency account to be equal to six months of expenses  and still be able to pay for the apartment renovation you wanted. By having a finance meeting weekly and a bigger one at the end of every month, you were super pro-active in feeling secure about your financial future. This was the year of Reinvention for you, Michelle stepping into the new roles you want to play, and getting used to a new way of seeing yourself. Your identity has shifted, and you’ve really stepped into being a Mom and a “serious” (yet still playful!) Woman of the World. In some ways, things have really changed…but in others, they’ve stayed the same. Keep shining a light on your own uniquity, and what you know makes you special, and be intentional in your Yes’, choices and decisions. That way, your Reinvention will still feel very much authentically you. Love, Current Michelle How can I help make your Dear Future Me letter become a reality this year? Join me live in NYC  on 1/27 (there are still discounted tix left!) to make your career compass and/or put in an application to work with me one-on-one!

How to Use a Sample Resume Summary to Enhance Your Resume

How to Use a Sample Resume Summary to Enhance Your ResumeA sample resume summary is used by job seekers to help you understand the essential parts of your resume. It is a format that helps you organize your resume by breaking down your key information into specific sections. While it may seem pretty straightforward, it is much more than that. If you want to use it to better organize your resume, here are some useful tips on how to make it work for you.First, write your sample resume summary on a white and clean sheet of paper. Doing so allows you to see what type of format is used by different people. Your summary format can be anything, from the important items to the less important items, so be open to be flexible. If you want to make a resume summary format that is simply more efficient, for example, the first few sections of your resume, organize them the same way.Second, make sure that your summary format matches your job skills. The first part of your resume is your biography. The next part of your resume is your resume summary. Just like a biography, it is a personal section of your resume. If you want your resume summary to be more effective, then make sure that your resume summary follows the same format as your bio.Third, don't forget to mention the specific skills you possess that make you ideal for the job. For example, if you are a writer, you must include your writing abilities and other relevant writing and proofreading skills. If you are a business person, then list those skills first in the resume summary section. You will be surprised at how well your resume summary will connect with prospective employers.Fourth, you must always leave space between your sample resume summary and your resume. If you're applying for a position with a national company, you may want to leave a bit more space between the two. It is not recommended that you utilize a two-spaced resume. You may want to use one space to highlight your accomplishments and expertise.Fif th, a sample resume summary is best used for a specific job opening. If you're applying for a job at a small company or an entry-level position, then leave more space between your summary and resume. However, if you're applying for a job in an executive position or executive management position, then you may want to leave more space between your summary and resume. It is recommended that you make sure that your resume summary will help you be competitive in the job search. If you are not able to make your resume summary better, don't despair. In the next few paragraphs, you will learn how to make your resume summary even better.

How Long Is Too Long for My Resume

How Long Is Too Long for My ResumeYou know the mytha good resume should be no longer than one page. Why in the world should that be etched in stone?Maybe one page is bedrngnis the right length. You might have a lot of accomplishments to share. You might have a very long career history. And it might notlage be even remotely reasonable to expect you to sum yourself up in one page. Now, that said, how long is too long?Best Length for a ResumeHere is my best advice Say what you need to say, and then stop. Remember, too, that people like to process information in snippets, so instead of going on and on for paragraphs, deliver your information in bullet points, no more than three lines long.Keep your career summary to three or four lines. And finally, go back to your paragraphs again, and make sure that none of them are any more than three or four sentences.Remember, you can hardly ever deliver information in snippets that are too short, but you can go too long. Condense wherever you can, a nd look at your language. Think about the way you usually speak. Do you say At this point in time instead of Now? Do you say In the event that instead of If? Do you say In the fullness of time instead of When? At this point in time, you are in full comprehension of the essential meaning of the concept.Okay, I didnt say that. What I said, if you have been paying attention, is You know what I mean. Keep it short and simple, and never use more than one word when one will suffice.Condense, Condense, CondenseI cant say it often enough. Condense. Do not go on forever. Now, having said that, the two-page resume guideline is just thatit is a guideline, not a rule. But the less people have to read about you, the more they will learn about you. Say what you have to say, and then say no more.Building a Nice, Tight ResumeFiguring out the right length for your resume might not always be easy. Its no problem if you have a very brief employment history but if you have been in the workforce for a l ong time, it can be hard to decide what to include and what to omit.In my e-learning course, Whats Wrong With My Resume? 10 Questions to Ask Yourself and How You Can Fix It, I talk about how to create a resume that showcases your talents and achievements without going overboard. Corporate Perks 6 Benefits for a Happier, Healthier Workforce

Corporate Perks 6 Benefits for a Happier, Healthier Workforce Life happens during work hours. Work happens during life hours. Forward-thinking companies accept that fact and have started to design corporate benefits to minimize the time personal activities take at work, as well as promote employees having a healthy life and less stress outside of their job. From the small to the grandiose, companies can find great returns when they treat their employees well and offer corporate perks. What are corporate perks?Corporate perks are the benefits that companies offer their employees as incentives and because they care about their employees work-life balance and overall morale and satisfaction. While corporate perks can be monetary, theyre usually leid though they do have a monetary value. These perks are not required of companies, but they do help set companies apart from their competition. What are six examples of corporate perks? Here are six company perks that many corporations offer to th eir employees.1. Free College Admissions CounselingCollege experts are being hired by companies to help professionals and parents navigate the college admissions, financial aid, and educational savings processes. You have to do these activities during working hours, because colleges dont work after five oclock, said Elizabeth Venturini of College Career Results. Employees get help from an expert, and they can stay focused on their jobs. Bonus? Less teenage drama. One such company offering this perk program is LinkedIn. The companys outside specialists help families compile a targeted college list based on student preferences and academic record, provide one-on-one counseling customized to a familys needs, and each student can submit up to 15 college applications and essays for review.2.Paid SabbaticalNo longer just the purview of academics, a paid sabbatical is gaining popularity with other companies and organizations, including charity water. How does it work? After five consecutive years of full-time work, the group encourages its kollektiv to take between four and six weeks of paid leave. Introduced in 2016, its team members have chosen to use their sabbaticals to train to become a yoga teacher at a retreat in Bali, take their first international solo trip in Europe, and return to the community in Togo, West Africa, where they served in the Peace Corps.Lauren Letta, charitywaters chief operating officer explained, Knowing that it is much less common for people to stay at the same job for mora than a couple of years these days, we introduced the sabbatical policy as a way to celebrate peoples dedication to the organization and their commitment to our mission. We also recognize that we work in a fast-paced, sometimes high-pressure environment, and we wanted to make sure that people had time to step away from their day-to-day work, to take a break, and to explore other passions. As much as we hope that the sabbatical will increase our retention, that is not the primary goal. The primary goal is to reward our employees and show them that we appreciate their dedication. When people return from sabbatical, the only requirement is that they share what they did with their time with the rest of the organization. The purpose of this is to inspire others to take their sabbaticals and to learn from one another. Its not a one-time deal at charity water five years after your first sabbatical, you can go again.3. Healthcare ConciergeTrying to navigate the excessively complex U.S. health ordnungsprinzip is endlessly frustrating and a giant time suck for employees. Enter a healthcare concierge, a personalized service that helps employees do everything healthcare, including finding cost-effective providers, scheduling doctors appointments, battling for reimbursement, and correcting dreaded billing mistakes. One of Nebraska Furniture Marts employees summed it up this way I feel like Im a rich person who has assistants to help me.The Midwestern home furni shings retailer has been using Compass Professional Health Services since 2012 to help its employees become good consumers of healthcare, particularly in light of high deductible health plans said Tiffaney Kuper, benefits manager with Nebraska Furniture Mart. An M.R.I. in Omaha at a location very near to our business is $600. That same M.R.I. in West Omaha at a hospital is $4,500. To me, thats the biggest shock factor and reason why I love Compass, explained Kuper.Thats not the only reason, Kuper, a busy mom, finds it helpful to allow Compass to find providers and make appointments. Recently, my daughter was complaining of having trouble seeing the board at school. She had an eye exam nine months prior, so I had already exhausted my insurance options. Since I was paying out of pocket, Compass helped me locate a low-cost option to get an exam. My daughter did end up needing glasses. Im glad they were able to find me something affordable, so I could get it taken care of right away. As sistant indeed.4. Wellness RemakeWith healthcare costs on an endless march higher, companies started to question what they were getting in return for their wellness spending. Instead of scrapping programs altogether, fruchtwein companies have opted to start small, rethink, or redesign their offerings. For creative powerhouse, Deutsch, an advertising, design and digital agency that works with companies like Target and Volkswagen, it started with weekly meditation sessions, expanded to include yoga, a wellness loyalty program, clean happy hours (think cold-pressed juices, coconut water and booster shots), and even details like doTERRA oil diffusers and removing germy, smelling sponges in their kitchen.Val DiFebo, Deutschs CEO, explained the focus on scent. Science has shown that essential oils are a multi-tasker in the workplace they can have an impact on reducing workplace stress and creating alertness and combatting colds and sniffles, and act as an air freshener. Were also taking a page from Walt Disney World, one of the greatest marketers of all time, and their incorporation of scents throughout the park. Theres a feeling of positive energy, and employees and clients notice it. Its the details, people.5. Pawternity LeaveProgressive companies are expanding the definition of family to include our four-legged friends, including offering pawternity leave or time off to help your animals settle into their new life.Laura Peppino, head of talent acquisition at mParticle, told the Wall Street Journal, We offer maternity and paternity leave, and a pet is another member of the family. We dont discriminate just because they arent human. Pet parents rejoice6. A Perk that Elaine Benes Would LoveWhen the leadership team of Profiles, a Baltimore-based PR agency, started brainstorming new 2018 perk programs, two rose to the top work from home days and a paid day off in celebration of their birthday, said Amy Burke Friedman, the companys President. Our team works hard, so it i s important to the leadership team that the company culture provide opportunities to relax and have fun, noted Burke Friedman I know Im personally excited to have the day off to focus on myselfI can finally use the spa gift certificate I got on my last birthday No more forced office celebrations, and your day can be yoursa gesture that companies of all size can make for their teams.--Jennifer Bewley is the founder of Uncuffed, which provides detailed research into prospective employers. Jennifer has an unhealthy love of financial data and speaking her mind and she uses each to help candidates choose the company they work for wisely.
